Edmund de Waal is a world-famous ceramicist. And so starts this terribly relocating memoir and detective tale as de Waal discovers either the tale of the netsuke and of his kinfolk, the Ephrussis, over 5 generations. A nineteenth-century banking dynasty in Paris and Vienna, the Ephrussis have been as wealthy and revered because the Rothchilds. but through the tip of the realm battle II, whilst the netsuke have been hidden from the Nazis in Vienna, this choice of very small carvings was once all that remained in their massive empire.
